Picture this in mind — it’s Thursday, you close your laptop, you’re on a flight before the sun even comes up, and by Saturday you’re floating in the warmest, clearest water you’ve ever seen in your life. No emails. No noise. Just you and the ocean.
That’s the kind of summer people are out here planning right now. And honestly? If you’ve been thinking about finally doing something really special this year, this is your sign.
Here’s where people are actually going — and why every single one of these places is worth it.
1. The Maldives — Yes, Even in Summer

I know what you’re thinking. The Maldives in summer? Isn’t that the rainy season?
Here’s the thing though — summer there is actually kind of amazing. The skies get dramatic and moody in the best way. Whale sharks show up. And the prices? They drop. Like, noticeably. You still get the overwater villa. You still wake up and look through a glass floor panel at fish swimming underneath you. You still get dinner on a private sandbank under the stars.
But there are way fewer people around. And that changes everything.
Places like Soneva Jani and Six Senses Laamu take things to another level — we’re talking private marine biologists, sunrise trips to find manta rays, and meals on your own stretch of sand with literally nobody else there.
It’s quiet. It’s personal. It feels like the whole place exists just for you.
And honestly… that’s the whole point.
2. Sardinia, Italy — The One Italians Keep to Themselves

You want to know where Italians actually go on holiday? Sardinia. That should tell you everything right there.
The coast up near Porto Cervo is stunning — boats everywhere, people who look like they’ve been tanned since birth, sunset drinks at marina restaurants that feel like a movie set. Forte Village near Cagliari is one of those resorts where you check in and genuinely never want to leave. Great food, incredible spa, pine trees everywhere, beach two minutes away.
But here’s my favorite thing about Sardinia — drive fifteen minutes away from all of that and it’s a completely different world. Little villages. Old men at festivals. Cheese that’s been made the same way for like four hundred years.
Rent a small boat for the day. Find a cove. The water is going to be three or four different shades of blue at the same time and you’re going to lose your mind a little bit. Bring some local white wine. Stay longer than you planned.
That’s the Sardinia summer experience. It’s really something.
3. Milos, Greece — Not Santorini. Better.

Okay I love Santorini as much as the next person but let’s be real — it’s packed. Like really packed. The people who’ve been going to Greece for years have quietly moved on to Milos and they are not telling anyone about it.
Milos has around forty beaches. A lot of them you can only get to by boat, which means they’re basically empty. The colors are wild — white sand, black volcanic rock, this deep burnt orange that looks unreal in the afternoon sun. Sarakiniko beach literally looks like you’re on the moon.
And the food in the little fishing village of Pollonia? Tables right at the water’s edge. Fresh seafood. The owner of the restaurant might actually sit down and chat with you because that’s just how it is there.
No queues for photos. No crowds in your cove. Just a really beautiful, quiet Greek island that hasn’t been taken over yet.
Go this summer. Seriously.
4. Baja California Sur, Mexico — Desert + Ocean + Really Good Vibes

Everyone knows Los Cabos. But the people in the know have been spreading out along the Baja coast and finding some genuinely special stuff.
Todos Santos is about forty minutes from Cabo and it’s a total vibe. It’s a UNESCO Creative City — artists live there, the streets are cobblestone, and there are little boutique hotels inside old buildings that have been completely restored. Hotel San Cristóbal has these whitewashed walls and handwoven everything, and a rooftop where you can watch the Pacific turn orange every evening.
Then there’s Acre Resort — imagine treehouses above the desert, olive and fig trees all around you, and a restaurant where they cook over open fire using stuff from their own garden. It’s small and intimate and the kind of place that feels really personal.
Mezcal on the rooftop. Desert behind you. Ocean in front. I mean… come on.
5. Montenegro — Europe’s Best Kept Secret (For Now)

Montenegro isn’t famous yet. But it’s getting there. Which means right now is honestly the best time to go.
The Bay of Kotor is one of those places where you pull up on a boat and just go quiet for a second because it’s that beautiful. Mountains dropping straight into the water. Medieval towns along the shore. The old town of Kotor has stone churches and cats everywhere and this warm orange light in the afternoon that makes everything look like a painting.
The Chedi Luštica Bay is stunning — clean design, a marina, and the wild Adriatic right there. And the food is so good and so local — lamb on an open fire, local honey, smoked meat — nothing fancy, just really really good ingredients done simply.
More and more people are starting to talk about Montenegro. The window to get there before it blows up is still open. But probably not for much longer.
6. Japan’s Ryokan Inns — Luxury Like You’ve Never Experienced

This one surprises people every time and I don’t know why because it absolutely shouldn’t.
A traditional Japanese ryokan inn is one of the most looked-after you will ever feel anywhere in the world. Not because it’s flashy — it’s actually the opposite of that. It’s the little things. Your robe is already laid out in your size when you arrive. Your private hot spring bath is drawn at the right temperature. Dinner is twelve small seasonal courses that feel less like a meal and more like an experience.
Places like Gora Kadan in Hakone and Tawaraya in Kyoto have been doing this for generations. They’ve figured out hospitality in a way that most places are still trying to catch up with.
Summer in Japan is gorgeous — green mountains, dramatic weather that clears into the most beautiful blue skies. Just book early because these places fill up fast and for good reason.
Here’s the Real Talk Though
The people taking these trips aren’t doing it to show off. They already have comfortable lives at home. What they’re actually looking for is something different — a moment where they feel genuinely small in front of something beautiful. A meal they couldn’t get anywhere else. A morning with zero plans and zero noise.
The very best trips this summer aren’t about the price tag. They’re about how alive you feel while you’re there — and how long that feeling sticks around after you’re back.
So before you book anything, just ask yourself one thing — where would make me feel the most like myself right now?
Start there. Honestly, everything else will fall into place.
Maldives lagoon, Greek island cove, rooftop in Baja, ryokan dinner in the mountains — one of these has your name on it. Which one is it?
