The Worlds Largest Skating Rink- When was the rideau canal built?

When was the rideau canal built?

The Rideau Canal, located in Canada, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic engineering feats of its time. Built in the early 19th century, it was designed to connect the Ottawa River to Lake Ontario and serves as a link between Montréal and Kingston. It is considered one of the world’s oldest continuously-operated canals, traversing 202 kilometers (125 miles) and featuring 47 locks. The canal is a popular tourist attraction for sightseers and adventurers alike, offering activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, boating, camping and more. Its history has shaped the modern landscape of Eastern Canada in many ways; it is a symbol of nation building that remains an integral part of Canadian culture today.

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship when it comes to skating. I always loved having the most fashionable and cute skates, but didn’t actually take the time to be great at skating. Luckily I still can say I’ve had a lot of good skating experiences, even while being a clumsy beginner skater. Whether you’re looking for an ice rink near you, or just an awesome outdoor skating rink to visit. I’m going to tell you about the worlds largest skating rink in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada which you must put on your bucket list!

The Rideau Canal, which also goes by the Rideau Waterway, connects Canada’s capital city of Ottawa to Lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence River at Kingston. It is also 202 kilometres long. The skating ring has amenities like change rooms, washrooms, beverage vendors, rest areas and lost and found. All of these amenities are very convenient, especially if you’re going with friends or family.

The Rideau canal is actually considered a great place to take the family or even a date. If you’re planning on visiting just for exercise, It takes about 2-3 hours to skate the length of the full canal. That is a super long time! I would love to know if you end up going and doing the full length of the rink, come back to this blog post and let me know how your experience was 😀

Unfortunately, as of this year 2023, The skating rink has been temporarily closed. But don’t lose hope! The Rideau Canal Skateway plans to reopen all the sections of the skateway as soon as ice conditions are safe and weather permits are good in Ottawa.  Apparently there was an issue with the getting the ice conditions up to par. We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop and update this blog post once it reopens for your knowledge.

As soon as this Rink opens up, we will also be planning our trip to Ottawa for another amazing skating experience. Ice skating is known to be a great workout that helps you engage muscles. This is part of the reason why I always still gave ice-skating a chance, regardless of me not being the best at skating.
